T: Very good! You have got a lot of information about Britain and we are going to learn more about it in this period.

Step II Reading (1): Visiting Britain

Ask students to predict the content of the text first.

T: Now, look at the title of the reading passage. What can you guess about the content of the passage from the title? To answer the question you should try to predict the content of the reading material by reading the title and looking at the pictures in the text. The title of the text is Visiting Britain.

S1: Let me try. We can see in the picture the intercity train running along the railway line and a typical imagine of British gentleman. So the text will give us more information about the transportation or traveling in Britain, as well as the people there and their life.

S2: Judging from the title, I think the passage is mainly about the places of interest of Britain and what should be paid attention to while visiting Britain.

S3: The title tells us that the content of the text will refer to the facts how people can visit Britain, what are the places to go, what should be taken with them and some special tips about traveling there.

Then ask them to skim the text and answer the following questions.

2. What is the writer?

S1: The text tells us about the culture shock the writer is experiencing and the advice she offers about visiting Britain.

S2: The writer is a Chinese student studying in London, who is giving advice to her aunt Mei about visiting Britain.
